Postmen to deliver message on importance of voting

Making a unique effort to motivate the voters to cast their votes on February 4, 2017 for the Punjab Assembly elections, the district election authorities have engaged postmen for the Systematic Voters’ Education and Electoral Participation (SVEEP) campaign to send appeal letters to every household in the district to inspire the voters to use their franchise.

To begin this special campaign, District Election Officer Kamal Kishor Yadav  flagged off a group rally comprising 50 postmen from the Head Post Office, Jalandhar.

The DEO revealed that these Postmen will start handing over appeal letters from today to motivate the voters to use their franchise on February 4, the day of polling, so as to ensure maximum participation.

“Initially, Postmen serving in areas falling under the Municipal Corporation, Jalandhar, will distribute these appeals to maximum number of households and from tomorrow onwards, postmen serving in rural areas will perform the same task so as to disseminate the message to motivate the voters to use their voting rights on merit during the ensuing assembly elections,” the DEO added.

Yadav revealed that the appeal letter has a message to make the voters aware of the importance of their voting rights so that the maximum participation can be ensured. Besides, the aim of this special campaign is to encourage the voters to cast their votes without any greed or influence, said the DEO.

He also informed that to make the residents aware in the districts, the same appeal is published on the rear of the passbooks being issued to the new account holders with the Postal department.

Election Commission ropes in postmen to boost voters’ participation in Punjab

In a novel initiative to increase voters’ awareness in poll-bound Punjab, the state Election Commission has roped in postmen to urge electors to come out in large numbers and exercise their franchise on February 4. According to district Election Commissioner in Jalandhar Kamal Kishor Yadav, “We are taking the help of postmen for electors’ awareness campaign under which a group of 50 postmen from the main post office have been asked to visit their respective areas and spread awareness among people”.

“The postmen will give letters to electors and request them to come out in large numbers and cast their votes on February 4 when assembly election for Punjab will take place. The aim of the initiative is to increase participation of electors in this festival of democracy,” the officer said.

In the first step, areas coming under municipality are being covered by the postmen who are visiting door to door to give requesting letters to voters. Soon after this, postmen will be sent to homes in villages and remote areas with the same message, Yadav said. In the letter, voters’ rights regarding exercising their franchise have been described.

“We have appealed to people to cast their votes fearlessly and do not fall prey to any greed and participate in the election process in large numbers,” the officer added.
